Intravenous Therapy & Blood Withdrawal Course

Our comprehensive 5-day, 36-hour program has been developed to meet the current California BVNPT educational requirements for Licensed Vocational Nurses seeking IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal certification. The updated curriculum consists of 27 hours of classroom theory and 9 hours of supervised hands-on clinical instruction, providing students with the knowledge, technical skills, and clinical confidence necessary to safely perform IV therapy and blood withdrawal within the California LVN scope of practice.

Comprehensive Course Curriculum

Students receive instruction in:

  • California laws, regulations, and LVN scope of practice

  • Infection prevention and Standard Precautions

  • Venous anatomy and physiology

  • Patient assessment and preparation

  • IV equipment and venipuncture devices

  • Intravenous therapy and blood withdrawal techniques

  • IV fluid administration and flow regulation

  • Venipuncture site preparation and stabilization

  • Recognition and management of local and systemic complications

  • Patient monitoring, documentation, and clinical judgment

  • Safe, evidence-based nursing practice

The clinical portion of the course provides extensive supervised hands-on instruction using modern IV simulation equipment before students progress to live clinical procedures.

Student Support Every Step of the Way

Our commitment extends beyond the classroom. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive all documentation required for California BVNPT certification. As an added service, Vigilant Hands Nursing Education assists each student with preparing, reviewing, and submitting their completed BVNPT application packet to help ensure all required documentation is complete prior to Board review.

Clinical Competency Requirements

In accordance with current BVNPT educational standards, students must successfully complete all required theory instruction and demonstrate competency in all required clinical skills. To successfully complete the course, each student must perform a minimum of three (3) successful supervised live intravenous catheter insertions while demonstrating safe technique, sound clinical judgment, infection prevention practices, and professional patient care.

Course Completion

Students who successfully complete all theory instruction, clinical training, competency evaluations, and course requirements will receive a Certificate of Course Completion documenting successful completion of the BVNPT-Approved educational program.

Advanced IV Skills Certificate Course for Registered Nurses

This intensive 6-hour skills workshop is designed for RN students, new graduate Registered Nurses, and practicing RNs who want to strengthen their IV insertion skills, improve first-stick success, and gain confidence through extensive hands-on practice.

This course is intended for professional development and skills enhancement. It is not a certification course and is not affiliated with the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).

Course Format

  • 3 Hours of Interactive Classroom Instruction

  • 3 Hours of Hands-On Skills Training

Participants receive focused instruction followed by extensive hands-on practice using advanced IV training mannequins, simulation equipment, and current clinical IV supplies.

Hands-On Skills Training

Confidence develops through practice. Participants will receive individualized instruction while practicing on modern IV training mannequins.

Small class sizes allow for one-on-one coaching, repeated practice, and immediate instructor feedback to help participants refine their technique and strengthen clinical decision-making.

Training is conducted in a comfortable home-based classroom designed to provide a relaxed, supportive learning experience. Our goal is to create an environment where nurses can ask questions, practice repeatedly, and develop confidence without the pressures of a busy clinical setting.

Certificate of Completion

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an Advanced IV Skills Certificate of Completion from Vigilant Hands Nursing Education.

This certificate documents successful completion of advanced IV skills training for professional development purposes. It does not confer specialty certification, alter nursing licensure, or replace employer competency validation.
